Mellus family papers, 1787-1953

Papers of the Mellus and related Thacher families of Lubec and Machias, Maine, 1787-1953, include correspondence, genealogies, printed material, accounts, leases, inventories, and estate papers. Correspondence includes letters from sea captain Edward Mellus to his wife Harriet Thacher Mellus and other Thacher family members concerning daily life, personal matters, sailing and descriptions of ports, sent from Hong Kong, Manila, Spain, South America, California, and New Orleans, 1845-55. Letters from Joseph Thacher, a farmer in Zumbrota, Minnesota, describe daily activities, the difficulty of the frontier experience, and farming, 1866. Dr. Edward Lindon Mellus correspondence sent and received while attending Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Penn., and letters from Sgt. Charles A. Bailey, Quartermaster General for the 30th Maine Volunteer Infantry Regiment, 1864, describe the burned Louisiana countryside from Civil War battles, descriptions of rebel prisoners, and troop movements during the Civil War. Letters from his wife, Mary Gardner Mellus describes her travels and sightseeing during his medical residency in Europe. Also includes a correspondence and legal and estate papers of Mary Thacher Mellus and a collection of albums of picture postcards from various parts of the world. Also includes additional letters of Rev. Daniel Dodge, a Baptist minister in Delaware, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania and Jacob Brandt, merchant in Baltimore, Md., engaged in the transportation and supply of water to troops during the Civil War; and business correspondence relating to stock speculations and coastal shipping, accounts and receipts, and Brandt family estate papers.
